PROGRAMS AND GOALS

  • Raising A Reader Book Bag Rotation

  • The foundation of this program is the weekly rotation of more than 6,000 books into the homes of families with children under the age of six. Each week from October to May, 1,600 preschool children in 98 classrooms are given a bright red book bag filled with four age-appropriate books. In support of this effort, parents are instructed on the critical importance of reading aloud to their children. Each set of books is kept for a week, returned, and then replaced with another four books. This rotation provides 60-80 books to each home annually.

  • Parent and Teacher Education Program

  • Each fall, Early Learning Fund provides a series of 28 parent literacy orientation classes and two teacher professional development seminars. These sessions provide a detailed review of the latest early childhood literacy and early brain development research, as well as guidance on parent and teacher roles in the Raising A Reader program described above. Additionally, the organization's annual teacher conference provides an all-day teacher professional development experience that attracts more than 100 early childhood educators in the Roaring Fork and Upper Colorado valleys.

  • Library Introduction Program

  • Each spring, approximately 70 Raising A Reader classrooms take a field trip to their community's library where children are individually presented with their own Raising Reader library bag (to keep), their first library card, and the opportunity to check out their first library books. This "Blue Bag Library Day" experience reinforces the child's growing interest in books, reading and learning, and encourages parents to use library resources for their child.
