RESEARCH AND OUTCOMES

Evaluation data is collected from three sources: 1) an annual pre and post survey of parent behaviors; 2) an annual survey of teachers; and 3) data from school district assessments. Specific evaluation results follow.

  • For the 2010-2011 school year, average weekly read-aloud frequency among Raising A Reader families was 7 times per week. Initial program goal is 5 times per week.
  • Raising A Reader children scored from 3 to 10 percentage points higher than non-program children in kindergarten reading readiness tests conducted by several local school districts.
  • In kindergarten reading readiness tests conducted by Garfield County School District RE-2 (Rifle), just 21% of Raising A Reader children required intensive reading intervention compared to 39% of non Raising A Reader children.
  • At the end of the school year, 71% of Raising A Reader families reported that they were now checking out library books with their child, an increase of 27% from September.
  • The frequency of child requests at home for a parent to read aloud increased 30 percent from October to May.
  • Teachers reported heightened interest in books, improved vocabulary and enhanced attention span among Raising A Reader children.
  • Anecdotal reports from parents and teachers confirm that the broad range of concept genres introduced through Raising A Reader books has enhanced creative expression and early comprehension of basic concepts from mathematics and the sciences.
